Tokyo is known around the world for it’s incredible food scene and one of my favorite things about the city is that you can walk in to almost any restaurant and be confident the meal will be good. However, some restaurants have that extra something make them particularly great for romance. I have visited every restaurant on this list, most of them while on dates myself, and love them all for their excellent food and romantic atmospheres.

Aurelio is one of the most romantic restaurants in Tokyo and serves delicious Italian food. The menu features handmade pastas and natural wines and is basically as picture-perfect as meals get. Make a reservation soon because this restaurant tends to book up weeks in advance!

apéro is a gorgeous French restaurant tucked away on a back street in the upscale Aoyama neighborhood. It features a great wine selection alongside an assortment of French dishes made to be shared.

At ¥4,000 per person for the lunch course, Sushi Yajima offers one of the best values for the sushi quality in Tokyo.

Sushi Yajima is one of the best sushi restaurants in Tokyo at this price point and is a great pick for a lunchtime date. This tiny 8-seat restaurant is run by a couple and offers delicious set courses. However, note that is restaurant doesn’t let you linger – since Sushi Yajima is so small, you must eat then get moving. I recommend walking to Yebisu Garden Place or down to Meguro River for a post-lunch stroll if you want to keep the date going.

Ăn Cơm is on the second floor of a trendy restaurant hall called The Restaurant. If you’re looking for a nice yet lowkey date night, this is a great option. The food is delicious and the decor is modern, while the atmosphere is relaxed and fun.

Pigeon is a popular French restaurant in the up-and-coming Yoyogi Uehara neighborhood just northwest of Shibuya. The restaurant only has a few tables and the food is made by one chef, so you’ll feel very well taken care of.

Clandestino 41 is a great option for a romantic evening if you want a place with a chic bar atmosphere. The restaurant is small but lively and near many other bars if you want to continue the night elsewhere.

Almost every Italian I’ve met in Tokyo swears that this restaurant is the most authentic Italian restaurant in the city.

It doesn’t get more intimate than this. Gentil can seat about 10 people and all of the food is cooked by one chef. The atmosphere is a perfect mix of chic yet laid back.

Because the restaurant is so small, they only accept parties with reservations.

Sahsya Kanetanaka is a great lunch or dinner date spot for a refined twist on traditional Japanese dishes. The restaurant’s large windows look out onto a row of bamboo that creates an elegant backdrop for your meal.

I suggest booking ahead because there was a long line at Sahsya Kanetanaka every time I went. The lunch set menus are a great value and considerably cheaper than visiting for dinner.

Personally, I prefer visiting this restaurant for lunch or afternoon tea to fully enjoy the bright, airy atmosphere.
